Jinan, the ancient city with a long history and splendid culture, located north of the Yellow River and
south of the Mount Tai, is one of the important birthplace of Chinese civilization and a historical and
cultural city approved by the State Council. It possesses numerous key protection sites of cultural relics,
including 21 at the national level, 151 at the provincial level and 211 at the municipal level. It is extremely
abundant in the resources of historical and cultural relics, covering the categories of ancient sites, tombs,
stone-caved temples, old buildings, important historical sites and representative buildings of modern times.
The location of the first discovery of the Neolithic Longshan culture the Chengziya Archaeological Site, one
of the four famous Buddhist temples of China the Lingyan Temple, the oldest remaining pavilion-style stone
pagoda in China the Four Gates Pagoda, the largest church in the region and a landmark of Jinan the Sacred
Heart Cathedral in Hongjialou, the brick pagoda of an unusual form of the Tang Dynasty the Nine-top Tower
are the most typical representatives of this group.

The distinction of cultural relics among different regions is derived from the particularity of historical
and cultural relics. Take the architectural heritage for example, the buildings in Jinan with the characteristics of
terseness, quietness and plainness look different from those in Beijing and in the south area of China, which have
delicately combined the construction style and the resources of spring water to present an unique elegance.

Now the buildings and relics that highlight the development of the regional history have been recognized
as part of the category of cultural objects and historic monuments, as the country attaches great importance
to cultural relics protection, the concept of cultural relics protection continues to develop and the definition
of cultural relics has been constantly updating. In the following part, it focuses on the introduction of several
important cultural relics protection units at national and provincial levels.
